Ohrid is a city with a rich historical and cultural heritage and it is rightfully known as a museum - city with its artistic treasury for centuries.
Among the most famous cultural and historical monuments in Ohrid and the lake shore are: Ohrid Citadel (Samuel's Fortress), the Antique Theatre, Klement's monastery "St. Panteleimon "(Imaret) current Plaosnik, the churches "St. Sofia", "St. Clement" ("St. God Peribleptos"), "St. John Kaneo", "Sv.Nahum"; museum settings, the House of Robevci, the House of Urania; the old town with the specific architecture and theatrical layout of houses; Gallery of medieval icons, Museum of Slavic literacy and many others. Here we should also mention the famous Ohrid wood-carving school which roots date back from the XII and XIII century.
Numerous monastery and church’s iconostasis speak for this supreme art, as well as the wood elements in the interiors of the old and rich houses in Ohrid.
Ohrid is actually known as the Balkan Jerusalem in the Republic of Makedonia, becaue of its cultural history.
Besides tourism as one of the most important industries, the light industry is also developed in Ohrid. There is also a network (developed) of small crafts for filigree workmanship of silver jewels and the famous Ohrid pearls.
Besides its rare natural beauty, Lake Ohrid stands out with its exceptionally rich fauna and many fish species, from which the most famous is the endemic Ohrid trout.
For four decades Ohrid has been a host to one of the most important music and dramatic events, The International Festival “Ohrid Summer” in which eminent musical and theatrical artists participate from around the world.
Since 1980, the city of Ohrid together with the Lake Ohrid, a rare natural phenomenon, have been under the protection of UNESCO.
